How to Tell if Your Tire Can Be Repaired

Your tires travel over all kinds of things besides asphalt. They can hit potholes, pick up nails and screws, or run over curbs. In any of these instances, you could end up with a flat tire. If this happens and you live around Weatherford, Cisco, or Breckenridge, you can bring your tire to Stanley Ford Eastland.

When Your Tire Can Be Repaired

The first thing our team will do when you bring your damaged or flat tire to our service center is look at the puncture to determine if it can be repaired. The location of the puncture will be an important consideration along with the severity of damage.
If your puncture is in the tread area, it’s possible to be fixed. The puncture should be less than a quarter of an inch long. Even if you have two punctures, you might be able to repair the tire. The two punctures must be at least 16 inches away from each other. You can’t make more than two repairs on a tire.
If the puncture is more than ¼-inch in length, it will likely need to be replaced. If the puncture is located in the shoulder or sidewall of the tire, it can’t be repaired.

Special Cases

In some cases, a small puncture may not be repairable. If your tire has a bubble in the sidewall, it won’t be able to be repaired. Some run-flat tires can be repaired after having a flat tire. It’s best to not let the tire get below 15 psi unless necessary.
If you get a flat on a tire that has already been repaired, you may still be able to get it fixed again. The service technician will need to make sure the puncture isn’t too close to the previous repair or that it doesn’t compromise the prior repair. If the earlier repair was done properly, you may be able to fix the new puncture.
Many people carry sealants or emergency inflators with them in case they get a flat tire out on the road. It seems easier than changing the tire on the side of the road. However, it’s usually not the best course of action. Tire sealants can cause damage to the tire pressure monitoring system. They also freeze in cold weather and may not even fix the leak. If you use the sealant, the tire won’t be able to be repaired when you take it in for service.
Short-term solutions should only be used in cases where you don’t have a spare tire or it’s too dangerous to change it. If you can’t call for help, the emergency solution can help you get to safety. But you’ll probably need to replace the tire.
