Interior Heating System Service at Stanley Ford Eastland

A faulty or damaged heating system is not anything anyone wants when the temperatures drop. If your heating system is not functioning properly, it can be dangerous. If you are having problems with your vehicle’s heating system and you live in or near Breckenridge, Cisco, or Abilene, you can have our expert technicians at Stanley Ford Eastland take a look at your vehicle and diagnose the problem.

How Does My Vehicle’s Heater Work?

Your heater works in much the same way as your air conditioner. In essence, it takes in air from the outside and heats it up where it is then blown into the cabin to keep you warm. It does this by taking air into the front of the vehicle. From there, this high-pressure air is routed to your engine’s heater core. The heating core is like a small radiator that is filled with hot coolant from your vehicle’s engine coolant system. The air taken in passes over the heater core to allow heat exchange to cool the core, by heating the air before it passes into the cabin interior. Although this seems simple, straightforward, and efficient, the process gets more complicated as the temperature gets regulated.

To regulate the temperature, there must be a thermostat. How the thermostat works depends on the age of the vehicle. In older vehicles, temperature is regulated by using a water valve. This valve controls whether greater or lesser amounts of coolant are funneled into the heater core, depending on the desired temperature you set with your heater control. The method that is used in newer vehicles is called the air-blending method. This method keeps your heater core operating full-on, but the temperature is adjusted based on flaps that allow colder outside air to mix with heated air based on how you adjust your cabin temperature control.

Why Isn’t My Heater Working?

Several things can impede proper heater function, some of the most common reasons however include:

  • Blend Doors: Your blend door controls airflow from the AC side of the system and opens the heater side and vice versa. The blend door and flow doors are controlled by actuators that open and close flaps. If the doors get stuck or the actuators fail, warm air may not get into the cabin.
  • Heating Core Blockage: Coolant needs to be purged occasionally to keep it clean. If it gets too contaminated, it will not circulate easily.
  • Bad Thermostat: If your temperature gauge reads Cold after you’ve been running your engine, your thermostat may be bad so it cannot control temperatures.
  • Faulty Blower: If your vehicle is warm but little air is coming from the vents, you may need a new blower fan motor.
  • Low coolant: If there is not enough coolant circulating, it cannot render heated fluid through the heater core chamber. If you add coolant, you should see a big difference.
